Up and Coming, Up and Running

Your Green Tomato Grocery board members are learning and sharing with nearly 30 other startup and running cooperatives February 26-28 in Bloomington, IN. The Up and Coming, Up and Running conference is coordinated by the Indiana Cooperative Development Center with assistance from a number of cooperative development agencies, businesses, and consultants. The workshops and resources are designed to assist co-ops in the early stages of organizing and opening to achieve success.

Thanks to a grant from the Ralph K. Morris Foundation we were able to reduce the usage of our existing member equity to cover the expenses incurred for this wonderful event. Directors will be attending workshops and networking with other startup cooperatives to increase understanding and planning in many areas:

  • Co-op governance
  • Branding
  • Owner recruitment
  • Organizational finance and accounting
  • Communications
  • Leadership development

As we gear up for the next round of ownership drive campaigns, the lessons learned will be invaluable. We look forward to sharing our experiences and connecting with owners and potential owners soon!

What is a Co-Op?

A co-operative is a voluntary ownership organization, open to anyone willing to support it and accessible to everyone--including non-owners--to shop. Its member-owners ultimately decide how the co-op will operate and how operating surpluses are distributed. Because it is wholly-owned by members of the community it serves, it naturally acts with genuine concern for that community.

The United Nations declared 2012 the International Year of Co-operatives, and the International Co-operative Alliance published a Blueprint for a Co-operative Decade in early 2013. The Green Tomato Grocery is one of a network of many start-up food and grocery co-operatives in the Chicagoland area, the greater Midwestern region, and the United States itself.
